The dry farmed and organically grown ‘Berger’ vineyard was planted up in the peaks of Sonoma Mountain over 70 years ago, with the family still living on site.  It’s a gorgeous vineyard that produces all the spice and structure you would expect from a cooler weather mountain site. The first cabernet we ever made was called ‘Lo Scuro’ (‘the darkness’ in Italian) because it was a Tuscan blend of Cabernet/Sangiovese/Merlot from Dry Creek Valley vineyards. This one is a different animal, closer to home in Petaluma, but the name is still appropriate. It’s 100% cabernet and always ominously dark from the small berries typical of the vineyard.

These old vines were hit hard by the stress of the drought, barely yielding .5 tons per acre for the past several years, and might require replanting in the very near future.  The wine produced from these vines, however, is still remarkable.  2016 was a cool vintage and a long growing season after a very wet winter.  There's plenty of brooding fruit here, many layers of cassis, dark cherry, and tobacco flavors with a very structured tannic finish.

If you drink it now: let it breathe, and drink it with sirloin or a rich cheese to match its muscular backbone. If you have the patience: it will drink wonderfully 5-20 years from now.  This is one of the finest and most age worthy wines we have produced. Unfortunately, we only made 50 cases of this wine.  With the decline of the vines and obvious needs for replanting, this will probably be the last vintage we see from this vineyard for a very long time.
