This is a special 10 year anniversary artist series bottling of our estate zinfandel! We have resurrected the original label, and three other local Petaluma artists have done their own interpretations as well. Each case will have all four bottles in honor of our ‘Mr Beast’ old vine zinfandel! Mr. Beast, our flagship red wine and the reason we are known for our zinfandel, is named after our wiley and now notorious cat. Our friend did a painting of him 10 years ago and that became our first label! Dry farmed and organically grown, our zinfandel comes from our estate vineyard ‘Sleeping Dog’ of Sonoma Mountain, which produces spicy, elegant, and finessed Sonoma County style zinfandel from a mixture of volcanic and sandy loam soils. These are old head pruned vines planted over 55 years ago, and the flavors they are capable of are outstanding.
2018 was a long, cool growing season with few surprises. Ample rainfall during the winter made the crop plump and big, and temperatures rarely got over 80 degrees. No frost and no rain gave the fruit the ability to hang on the vine for a very long time and develop all the rich fruit flavor that was possible. Too much richness without acidity is a bad thing, but the cool weather kept the acidity fresh and zippy.
This is a classic vintage with loads of flavor and structure. The nose is explosive with red fruit and chili powder aromas. Layers of brooding raspberry and rich wild strawberry flavors are supported by an earthy backbone and a slightly tannic finish of briary pepper spice. As always, bottled unfined and unfiltered after being aged in 20% new American oak barrels. Our flagship wine is very versatile: perfect with a cheeseburger or saucy American BBQ, as well as slow cooked meats, spicy curries, or pasta. One of our all time favorite pairings was during a multi course Barber Cellars restaurant event: Mr. Beast with squid ink pasta and clams. It was amazing!
