‘Sleeping dog vineyard’ (formerly Topolos vineyard) is the new registered name for our main vineyard: the secluded zinfandel field blend vineyard on Sonoma Mountain that everyone has come to love and enjoy through our ‘Mr Beast’ and ‘Zin Master’ bottlings. Surrounded by oak and eucalyptus trees and rich in a plethora of volcanic soils, the vineyard was planted by Mike Topolos 50 years ago and sold/bought/renamed by new owners a couple years ago. Don’t worry, we still control the vines and nothing has changed: it is still dry farmed, organically grown, and produces a unique and finessed southern Sonoma zinfandel blend.

The 2015 vintage was the apex of the drought.  Drought years create the best wines (you want vines to be stressed and well drained to create depth of flavor), but this was the first year vineyard yields suffered and drought conditions hit everyone hard.  Scraggly leaves and tiny berries led to one of the lowest yields (30% across Sonoma/napa) and the earliest harvest on record in California. BUT…no mildew, no late rains, long cool summer, no early rains in October, no frost…  The rest of the year had picture perfect conditions for a classic vintage.  In short, 2015 was the best vintage of which nobody made hardly anything. You might have noticed roses in short supply last year (not enough fruit to go around), and prices for high end napa/sonoma wines will surely go up.  We shoot for 3 tons per acre off this old vine vineyard.  In 2015, we only got 1 ton per acre and only made 150 cases of the Beast.

Our tiny zinfandel berries gave this wine plenty of color and structured tannin and the early harvest yielded wonderful acidity at full ripeness.  This is a powerful and structured vintage, an age-worthy vintage of balance and brightness, and this is our favorite wine since the serious 2012 vintage (Lorraine even thinks the 2015 is better than 2012).  This beast will take time to open up.  It already tastes wonderful, with a rolling tannic backbone supported by clove, cedar, pepper spice and wild raspberry fruits, but it will age gracefully and peak 4-7 years from now.
